How Much Does a Full Gearbox Upgrade Cost: A Realistic Budget
September 30, 20266 min read

The cost of a gearbox upgrade varies enormously with the goal, from a simple reliability tweak to a complete performance-oriented overhaul. Understanding the possible spending tiers helps set a realistic budget before you start, rather than finding out the bill as you add parts one after another.
Tier 1: basic reliability, contained budget
A basic MOSFET, a set of precise shims and a general lubrication check make up the entry level of upgrading, aimed at reliability rather than power. This level suits a player who simply wants to extend the life of their replica without changing its raw performance.
Tier 2: intermediate mechanical reinforcement
- Reinforced piston with metal teeth
- Better-quality gear set with ball bearings
- Ball-bearing spring guide
- This level prepares the gearbox to take a more powerful spring without early wear
Tier 3: performance and accuracy
A tight bore barrel change, a new quality bucking, adjustment of the cylinder/barrel ratio and a full hop-up setup make up this accuracy-oriented tier, generally combined with a spring change suited to the target field. This is the level where the budget starts to become significant, but where the performance gain becomes truly noticeable.
Tier 4: complete competition-oriented overhaul
This level combines all the previous tiers with high-end parts on every component (high-performance motor, programmable MOSFET, reinforced gearbox shell), an investment mainly justified for competitive or very intensive use where every detail counts.
Labour: a line not to underestimate
On top of the cost of parts comes the labour of assembly and setup, especially timing adjustment after the upgrade, a technical step that takes time but directly determines the reliability of the final result. A botched assembly of quality parts gives a disappointing result, whatever budget was put into the parts.
Spread the investment instead of doing it all at once
Rather than aiming straight for the top tier, upgrading gradually based on the playing experience gained lets you adjust choices to the real needs identified, and spread the spending over time without compromising the coherence of the whole at each stage.
Ask for a clear quote before committing
A detailed, part-by-part quote lets you compare precisely what's being offered and adjust the project to the budget you really have, rather than discovering a surprising final amount afterwards.
What to remember
- The cost depends on the goal: there is no universal price
- Tier 1, reliability: basic MOSFET, precise shims, lubrication check
- Tier 2, mechanical reinforcement: reinforced piston, better gears, ball-bearing spring guide
- Tier 3, accuracy: tight bore barrel, quality bucking, cylinder/barrel ratio and hop-up setup
- Tier 4, competition: high-end parts everywhere. Also budget for labour and timing adjustment, and ask for a detailed part-by-part quote
