Leaking Cylinder Head Seal: Symptoms and Repair

The cylinder head seal keeps the seal between the cylinder and the nozzle at the moment of air compression. A leak at this exact point reduces the energy transferred to the BB without causing any dramatic noise or symptom, which makes it particularly hard to spot without a targeted diagnostic.

The symptoms that should raise a flag

  • A gradual FPS drop with no obvious cause, often mistaken for a spring losing tension
  • A light hiss or breath audible on every shot, different from the gearbox's usual mechanical noise
  • A sense of less resistance right as the piston finishes its stroke
  • A noticeable FPS difference between a single shot and a fast burst, the leak having more time to act over a slower cycle

Why this seal wears out in particular

The cylinder head seal takes repeated pressure at very high frequency, especially on setups with a powerful spring. A mediocre seal material installed from the factory deforms or cracks faster than a better-quality one, regardless of the maintenance applied elsewhere.

The diagnosis: hard without opening the gearbox

Unlike an HPA line leak, detectable with soapy water, a cylinder head seal leak sits inside the closed gearbox, making a direct visual test impossible without disassembly. An experienced technician can steer the diagnosis by ruling out other, more easily checked causes (spring, bucking, barrel) before concluding it's this specific internal leak.

The repair

Replacing the cylinder head seal requires fully opening the gearbox — a good opportunity to also inspect the piston head seal, which often suffers similar wear and is worth replacing at the same time as a precaution rather than reopening the gearbox again shortly after.

Prevention over cure

Fitting higher-quality seals from the start, during a build or a gearbox upgrade, sharply limits the risk of this sneaky fault. On an entry-level replica with basic factory seals, a preventive replacement during a first full service is a reasonable precaution rather than waiting for an FPS drop to act.

What to remember

  • A cylinder head seal leak causes a gradual FPS drop with no obvious noise or dramatic symptom
  • Light hiss on firing, less resistance at the end of the piston stroke, and a gap between single-shot and burst FPS
  • Hard to diagnose without opening the gearbox: the technician rules out other causes first
  • The repair requires a full gearbox opening — a good moment to also check the piston head seal
  • Fitting quality seals from the start sharply cuts the risk of this fault
